Vinyl Siding Installation & Replacement

Vinyl siding is the most popular siding choice for good reason: it’s affordable, low maintenance and available in a wide range of colors and styles. Superstorm Roofing & Siding installs and replaces vinyl siding, and repairs storm-damaged vinyl, across Des Moines, Central Iowa and North Central Iowa.

Benefits of Vinyl Siding

  • Budget friendly: vinyl usually costs less to buy and install than engineered wood, fiber cement or steel.
  • Low maintenance: no painting, and it cleans up with a garden hose.
  • Lots of options: many colors, profiles and textures, including insulated vinyl for added energy efficiency.
  • Easy to repair: damaged panels can often be replaced without redoing the whole wall.

Vinyl Siding and Iowa Storms

Vinyl can crack from hail or impacts, especially in cold weather. If your siding was damaged in a storm, we’ll document it with photos and help you through your insurance claim. If you’re replacing siding and want more impact resistance, ask us about LP SmartSide, James Hardie or steel siding.

Vinyl Siding: The Trade-Offs

Vinyl is a great value, but it isn’t the right fit for every home. Here’s what to weigh:

  • Cold-weather brittleness: vinyl gets stiffer in Iowa winters, so a hard impact in January is more likely to crack it than the same hit in July.
  • Heat distortion: concentrated heat, such as sunlight reflected off some energy-efficient windows or a grill parked too close, can warp panels.
  • Fading over time: darker colors can fade unevenly, which makes matching a single replacement panel harder years later.
  • Thickness matters: thicker panels and insulated vinyl stay straighter on the wall and stand up better to impacts.

Standard vs. Insulated Vinyl

Insulated vinyl has a rigid foam backing attached to each panel. It makes the siding stiffer and more impact resistant, helps it lie flatter on uneven walls, and adds a modest boost to your home’s energy efficiency. It costs more than standard vinyl, and we’ll show you both so you can decide whether the upgrade is worth it for your home.

Caring for Vinyl Siding

  • Rinse it once or twice a year with a garden hose and a soft brush.
  • Keep grills and fire pits well away from the walls.
  • Replace cracked or loose panels promptly so water can’t get behind them.

Vinyl Siding FAQ

Can you replace just a few damaged panels?

Often, yes. The challenge is color: siding that has been in the sun for years may not match new panels exactly. We’ll be upfront about how close a match is likely to be.

Can vinyl siding be painted?

It can be, with paints made for vinyl, but painting it a darker color than the original can cause warping. In most cases, replacing faded siding is the better long-term choice.

Is vinyl a good choice if I’m worried about hail?

Vinyl is the most likely of the common siding types to crack in hail. If impact resistance is a priority, LP SmartSide, James Hardie fiber cement or steel are stronger options.
